Music has always been an important part of my life. Growing up mostly on soul, Motown, classic rock, and Irish folk music, I obsessed over knowing music, where it came from, and who made it. It carried me on bad days and celebrated with me on the good ones.

I first met breaking when I was almost 18; I regret sometimes that I didn’t get to know it sooner.

What up yall! My name is EduKate, and I am a bgirl and DJ from Atlanta currently living in Chicago, IL.

I started breaking in 2005 and got into DJing after moving to the Midwest in 2011. I’ve competed on the international scene as a bgirl, judged and organized battles, and as a DJ I’ve moved dance floors in Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago at an assortment of hip hop events. I run a website called I Know My Hip Hop, and I am also available to judge, DJ, or teach workshops for your next event!

I do it for many reasons: to be a woman participating actively and positively in the community, to express myself, to build with others, to teach and to guide youth on a path to self-understanding… But most of all, I do it for the freedom that the music brings me. So, if you have the chance, I hope you will come get edukated and get free with me.

I also write (aspiring journalist, also poet and novelist), study languages, practice yoga, train capoeira, and bike.

Breaking has given me my life. I can’t picture what I would do without it. I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to keep it such a large part of my day-to-day and to have met all of the wonderful people who I have met through our amazing community. I went through a pretty major injury back in 2010, and I was so touched at how welcoming our community was even when I couldn’t prove myself on the floor. I look forward to meeting new faces, and catching up with familiar ones, in the cypher.

You can spot me at any of these events in the coming months:
